I registered to run in the full marathon category of Penang Bridge International Marathon as an early bird and I considered this event as the most important of my running events in 2013 because this is the only full marathon I am taking part for the year. Last year I ran the full Marathon even though I had just recovered from fever and flu which lasted for almost 2 weeks. I was happy that I completed the race though I almost overshot the qualifying time of 7 hours. This year I trained but not as hard as last year but still believed I could run better than last year. In preparation for the full marathon , I took part in two half marathons, ie Standard Chartered KL marathon and Ipoh KRI half marathon.
9 days before PBIM 2013, I woke up feeling pain on my right leg and I thought it might be gout which would go away in one or two days. Definitely it would not disrupt my plan of running the Penang Bridge. The pain continued to torture me even though I took medicine for gout so I finally realized that I was suffering from the dreaded Achilles Tendinitis which would take weeks to heal. So I had to painfully bid farewell to PBIM 2013. I was in a cloud why I suddenly suffered from Achilles Tendinitis. After doing some review of literature, I only realized that I was myself to be blamed. I still used my worn-out shoes to walk or run, walk or run on hilly terrain too often, did not do warming up or cooling down exercise if I go for a walk, usually brisk and hilly terrain. These are the factors that contribute to Achilles Tendinitis.
I really regretted that I could only be a spectators and camera-man for the event this year. There is some complaints about the organizing of the event like the poor management while distributing running vest and bibs. I had to wait for one and the half hour to collect my running vest which usually takes take less than half an hour. Most of the runners in the lines were shaking their heads but I knew I should be the one who suffered the most sue to pain on my legs. I was unlucky to in the line where one computer is shared between single full marathon and group full marathon collection lines.
I have almost recovered from Achilles Tendinitis after more than two weeks. I went for a walk yesterday at Lake garden for 1 hour covering 3.5 km and felt only very slight pain due to stretching of the tendon or nerve. I hope I will recover completely soon so that I can start to train for my Chiangmai Half Marathon this 22nd of December. I have finally made up my mind to throw away the few pairs of shoes which are having uneven soles. For a runner, it is really painful not able to run even for a few days. Prevention of injuries should be the top priority to enjoy running without interruption.
